LENDAVA

Lendava extends you an invitation

The unusual historic and cultural traditions of this town and its surrounding
area of broad fi elds and picturesque vineyards make it well worth a visit.
Listen to the clatter of the klopotec; enjoy the bubbling healing waters of
the slow-moving River Mur, and the hospitality of the people - you will
want to stay a while.

A deed of donation from the year 1192 is the oldest,
known written source of the origins of Lendava. The
development of the mediaeval town and its castle
is connected to the aristocratic name of Banffy. In
the year 1366, on the holy day of Simon and Judas,
King Ludwig 1 bestowed upon the family the right to
hold mass in the dominion of Lendava as a reward
for Lord Banffy's service and devotion. At Lendava
Castle three books were printed in the years 1573
and 1574 at the travelling printers' shop.

At the end of the 16th century, because the castle
and fortress on the hill of the Holy Trinity were
seen as significant strategic points, the Turks laid
Lendava and its environs to waste. According to the
legend, Duke Mihael Hadik died in the battle against
the Turks in the year 1603, and his mummifi ed body
can be seen to this day in the Chapel of the Holy
Trinity.

Since 2006, the Town Hall with its modern
conference centre and sculpture of a Protestant
preacher - the symbol of the boundless power
of the book and tolerance - has been housed in
renovated Hotel Krone, the centre of town life at
the turn of the last century.
