LJUTOMER

Ljutomer is the main settlement in Prlekija territory. It is
a landscape of storks, thermal springs, excellent wines, clattering
klopotecs, of a cultural and natural heritage and hospitable people.
The settlement was first mentioned in the 13th century and received its
right to hold markets in the same century. However, it did not receive
its town charter until the 20th century.

142 years ago, at the first Slovenian Tabor,
a mass meeting, the idea of a united Slovenia was
born. The demands made by those fi rst participants
at that meeting in Ljutomer were the use of the
Slovenian language in schools, administrative
offi ces and at church services.

The first horse races in Slovenia took place
as early as 1874, in the vicinity of Ljutomer. A year
later in Ljutomer the first horse-racing club
on Slovenian soil was founded. Every year,
eight trotting races are held on the horse-racing
track in Ljutomer.

Also the fi rst Slovenian fi lm sequences were
shot in Ljutomer by Dr. Karol Grossmann in 1905
("Departure from the holy mass in Ljutomer", "Market
in Ljutomer" and "In the garden at home"). These may
be seen in the Museum in Ljutomer.
The first Slovenian self-service shop opened in
Ljutomer in 1958.
Visitors can visit the Žuman pottery and the late-17th
century Church of John the Baptist.
Every year, the Grossmann Festival for Film and Wine,
the Prleški sejem trade show and the Martini festival
attract lots of visitors.
