Because of its prominent position at the convergence of the rivers Raab and the Rabnitz and ideal transport connections the town has evolved from being the "gateway to East Styria" to being the hub of the region. Lots of innovative businesses, both small and medium-sized and some important large concerns have moved into the Gleisdorf area.
Historical:
Gleisdorf as an area of settlement goes back to Neolithic times. Excavations showed there was a settlement here in Roman times, known as "vicus". The first documented mention of the town is from the year 1229. In 1284 the settlement was first named as a market. Until 1570 Gleisdorf was under the rule of the Riegersburgs, and then the Freibergs. In the 18th and 19th centuries religious orders settled in Gleisdorf. In 1920, Gleisdorf received town privileges.
Art in Gleisdorf:
Gleisdorf is unrivalled in its diverse performances of modern and classical music and contemporary literature. Art and artistic projects such as the Steirische Herbst (Styrian Autumn), cultural discussion groups and the many groups of artists are a reflection of the diversity of the town.
