Vasvár, the Hungarian City of Culture, Hild-Award settlement, the Jewel of Vasi-Hegyhát is extremely rich in natural beauties, cultural treasures and attractions. Historical monuments, traditional cultures live together with friendly inhabitants surrounded by modern buildings and sculptures.
Town, with 4600 inhabitants, got its name from the castle in Arpad-era and the important role of iron processing in the early Middle Ages. Since the foundation of the state until 1578 it was a seating of Vas county and one of the most important places of Western- Transdanubian region. During Turkish wars town had been completely destroyed, in 18th century increased its importance as a township seating; recently plays an important role as the centre of Vasi-Hegyhát. What is called the entrenchment of Vasvár is a part of the former border defence system which began on the Grabenberg („Graben und Schanze“) west of the Kisköves Mountain and is today 8 km long, in places several metres high, and can be seen right up to the border of Hegyhátszentpéter. A reconstructed part (what is known as the iron gate) is an interesting historical architectural monument. Here you can also see here a part of the trade route, the soldiers road and a nature trail.
A much prized monument is the complex of church and monastery that belonged to the Dominicans with elements from almost all epochs in the history of the town.The monastery houses a museum with exhibitions on the Comitatus Vas in the Middle Ages and on the background of the Dominican order in Hungary. Here too you can see the legacy of the sculptor, Richárd Török, who died at a young age. Pilgrimages attracting several thousand pilgrims play a defining role in the life of the town. There are two feast days: the day of the Ascension of Our Lady in August, that is linked to events involving the traditional days of Hegyhát, and the Day of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the beginning of September, known too because of the old pilgrimage place Szentkút. The thermal water at the Szentkút spa rises from a depth of 2,100 m and is heat controllable. Whether you are looking for recuperation or lots of fun in the water you will have a good time. The thermal bath and swimming pool with water surface tension are open for guests from May till September.
