The town is located near the Hungarian – Austrian – Slovenian border, at the confl uence of the rivers Raab and Lafnitz. This is a place where the culture and traditions and three nations are unifi ed.
The settlement became known when French Cistercian monks established themselves there; the abbey took the name of the Holy Bishop Gotthard. Thanks to its geographical position and to art, Szentgotthárd opened the door to cultural wealth. The Baroque road begins here and goes right through West Hungary to reveal some matchless Baroque treasures. Most of the monuments that can be seen today are creations of the Baroque period of reconstruction, the church known as the granary (Getreidespeicher) is a relic of the former St. Gothard church built in 1667. Today, after renovation, a theatre and tourist centre are housed there. The building of the church and Cistercian abbey began in 1740 on the foundations of the mediaeval monastery. The scultural works in the church, the altarpieces, statues, reliefs and frescos show allegorical scenes. The church continues to function today and is a place of interest for visitors.
Palms, exotic plants and stone cladding that harmonize – this is what gives The St. Gotthard Spa & Wellness its unique mediterranean charm. In addition guests can look forward to its 1,500 m² area of water and special slides, whirlpool baths, sauna, Roman bath, medicinal and wellness treatments. Two peninsula-shaped outdoor pools with 30-32°C warm thermal
water fl ow under a wooden bridge that connects the two banks. The Mediterranean adventure pool is under a towering glass dome under palms. The pleasures awaiting bathers are many: a torrent that flows around the tropical island in the pool waiting on the hour and half hour for swimmers brave enough to face it, a waterfall swooshing down from the rock face, relaxing massage facilities where you may stand or sit, water mushrooms and under-water massages at different parts of the pool. Swimmers love the 25 m long and 2 m wide sports pool with 6 lanes. A paddling pool (20-40 cm) provides bathing fun for our smallest visitors. Succumb, too, to the temptations of Mediterranean delights!
