Letenye is a small town with 4,500 inhabitants at the „green heart“ of Zala. It is 2.5 hours from Budapest and one of the loveliest small regional centres of the Comitatus. It is located on the M7 (E71) motorway on the Hungarian Croatian border, 15 km from the Slovenian frontier, the most important gateway in the country to the Adriatic Sea. The Zrínyi Bridge over the Mur is the link between the land on the Mur and the Mur area, between two countries and in the direction of southern Europe. The Days on the Mur with its wide range of cultural events and entertainment has been tradition in the region since 1960 and in the past decade has turned Letenye every summer into a really festive small town: in addition to presentations of popular dishes from the Mur area and wine days visitors can also get to know our excellent artist groups, handworkers, craftsmen and women and enjoy our rich cultural heritage. According to objects found our settlement and its surrounding area by the rushing River Mur have been settled for thousands of years. The oldest fi nds date from Neolithic times around 3,000 years B.C. The first documentary evidence is from 1347. There is a permanent exhibition entitled “Chapters from the history of Letenye” which presents details about our past, the life of the inhabitants as fi shermen, hunters and gatherers and the history of our small town.
In the centre of the town those seeking recuperation will fi nd peace and quiet in the natural park of Szapáry-Andrássy Castle, near the time-honoured, 250 year old plane tree, and the Library, a magnifi cent building by the architect, Makovecz, an idyllic thermal bath and an Auto-Camping site. There are restaurants and guest-houses to look after the needs of our visitors. Our quiet town with its flowers is the centre of the landscape conservation area on the Mur. This romantic border river, the gentle, wooded hills of Zala and the intimate vineyards offer much in our urbanised world: cycling, hiking, camping wild near water, angling and hunting – refreshment and recuperation. Letenye is a station on the South Zala forest cycle track, nearby is the Hungarian Blue Tour hiking route and the town is a member of the Zala Wine Route society. Enjoy the magic of the old row of wine cellars and hillside chapels and taste some good aromatic wine in romantic surroundings.
