Lenti

Is in the south-west corner of the Comitatus Zala near the border with Slovenia, Croatia and Austria, at that point where three districts - Őrség, Göcsej and Hetés - have their meeting-point.

There are no firm details about the beginnings of the settlement, the first originate from mediaeval times. The corner tower of the 12th century castle is well preserved and has a beautiful cellar with barrel vaulting which can be visited today. In the centre of the town the Roman-Catholic church of St. Michael was built in the place of a mediaeval church dedicated to St. George. At the end of the 17th century it was built in Baroque style, with frescos by István Dorffmaister. The countryside of Lenti and the surrounding area is a treasure trove. Hikers and adventurers will enjoy experiences beyond comparison: the cycle tracks, hiking paths and the longest forest narrow-guage railway in Hungary, running between Lenti and Kistolmács. Snowdrops and spring snowfl akes bloom in their thousands, in late spring the snake’shead. Next to the narrow-guage railway station there is the Museum of Wood Industry and History of Railways, its title „The Treasures of Göcsej – Forest and Wood“.

In the spring of 2005, the House of Traditions was opened presenting a valuable collection of ethnography from the Hetés region from the 18th – 19th centuries and the works of the last
great shepherd wood carver, Lajos Soós.Visitors can get to know a master craftsman in the town who makes a whole range of local products: he is a basket-weaver, potter and candle-maker and produces hand-woven materials on a 130-year-old loom from Zalaszombatfa. The tourist attractions of the region are the Lenti Thermal Baths and the St. George Energy Park where the water has high levels of sodium hydrogen carbonate which is good for the musculoskeletal system, the joints, the spine and the circulation. At the Lenti thermal baths, there are 5 openair pools, 3 indoor pools and a halfcovered warm water adventure pool, sauna, steam chamber and a beauty farm, plus an 8-hectare lawn for those seeking relaxation and recuperation. The adventure pool has a water area of 1,340m², white water streams, massage benches, neck showers and a 74 m long giant slide – quite simply unforgettable. Within the area of the baths there is terrestrial radiation, known as the St. George lines, and they are unique in Europe. The combination of thermal water and radiation means that guests can recuperate more effi ciently, recharge their batteries and get well.

The Cultural Days on the Kerka is a long-standing tradition, its programme of events enlivened by cultural groups in the town. Programme items include events where products made by regional handicraft artists are displayed or local food and drink is presented.
